The city of Benaras, the spiritual heartland of India, is the creative ideology that drives Benaras Media Works, a film production house established in 2012.
French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr once famously said that the more things change, the more they remain the same. He could well be referring to the city of Benaras. The more contemporary the city becomes, the more it remains mystical. Benaras Media Works creates films in the same spirit – contemporary yet rooted; modern yet classic. After all, the company was formed by a local Benarasi boy, Anubhav Sinha.
Over the years, Benaras Media Works has produced ten films, amongst them are the box office hits and critically acclaimed MULK (2018) and ARTICLE 15 (2019). THAPPAD is slated for worldwide release (2020) and a scrumptious line up of films is in the oven for the near future, including a political satire, a college campus romance and an espionage thriller.
With brave decisions and hard-hitting stories, such as those on religious biases, caste discrimination and domestic violence, Benaras Media Works has become one of the most exciting production houses in the country. And with the essence of Banaras guiding it forward, the future of the company seems… well, the more it seems to soar, the more it remains grounded.
